These events are central to Gay Pride History. In 1994, during New York’s Gay Pride celebration, over 10,000 people carried a mile-long. They then proceeded to merge with the rest of the pride events afterwards. The rainbow flag continues to unite people of the LGBTQ+ community and serve as a symbol of solidarity.

Red represents life, orange represents healing, yellow represents sunshine, green represents nature, blue represents harmony and purple represents spirit. It was created by Gilbert Baker in 1978 after he was challenged by Harvey Milk who was the first openly gay. The flag was carefully thought out, and when it was designed by Gilbert Baker, it was made so that every colour represents something. This flag is used to represent the LGBTQ community.

The Gilbert Baker Foundation uncovered this priceless artifact in 2019 and donated it to the GLBT Historical. 1979 Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Turquoise, Indigo Blue, Violet Unfortunately, later that year Harvey Milk was assassinated. From hot pink to violet, the first flag was hand-dyed and stitched together by volunteers and flown with pride for the first time on June 22, 1978. On June 4th 2021, a piece of LGBTQIA+ history that we thought was long lost resurfaced: the original rainbow pride flag that was first raised on Jin San Francisco’s United Nations Plaza. The flag was created that year and it had eight stripes. Each colour in the Pride Flag has a unique meaning Early Gay Pride events (often called Freedom Day or Gay Liberation Day) were often sparsely attended and encountered protests, particularly because of the outlandish costumes that some marchers wore.
